Playgrounds of Mumbai: East Coast games in a West Coast village?
On the beach in Versova village, boys (didn't spot girls) speaking in Telugu among themselves were playing this game. All of them had sticks and they were hitting a tennis ball around and the game wasn't field hockey. I asked:
What do you call this game you are playing?
Gilli Danda.
With a ball?
Yes, with a ball.
This was not the only game these children of the Telugu speaking children of the fisheries workers who live and work in Versova fishing village were playing. In a little patli galli leading to the beach, we spotted these kids playing Housie or Tambola.
