M Ward

Mumba Devi and Associates: Typical designs of places of worship.

The reason for the design is that in Mumbai, the steeple, gopurams or the prayer tower sits on rectanglar boxes that can be several floors high and they provide the space for community activities. Halls for small family function, religious functions, etc. In the villages that Mumbai swallowed you will see that the places of worship still retain a small courtyard where people can congregate. The newer places do not have that luxury of space and they have to think vertical.
