The Faces of The Faceless.
When we die in bomb blasts it hurts the world a little less. Compared to the lives lost in 5 star hotels. That's because we have no fucking face.We are like the expressionless kids with a pig-like face in that famous Pink Floyd video waiting to be slaughtered. We are like this because we are faceless. We are the like the shoes that are polished 5 Rs Sada, 7 Rs Cream, black and brown. We are all alike. We are cattle class.
But we do have faces and they are not the bloody ones, the dead ones that you are used to seeing lying beside the tracks with Barkha raining TRP. We are not just alive, we have a life and if you look at us closely, we have faces that reveal life stories.
Chirodeep's yet to be released book "the commuters" captures these lives. These faces. Their lives through their faces. Subtle yet stunning photos that make you think. It's accompanied by a beautiful essay by Jerry Pinto. While you wait for it you can take a train today and simply observe the person sitting in front of you.

I paused when I saw what was printed on these two books that was lying in an box filled with old books. The books were lying outside a Hindi movie set at the Elphistone Technical College. These were the books bought from a second hand book seller to fill an imaginary college or office in movies.
But what is the chance of finding Union Carbide Safety Log Book in Mumbai? Was it part of some old movie set? Inside the book were a few account entries made in 2007 by some else.
I looked around for more and found this file too. The books and file looked like they were made in pre-computerised days. But the sticker in the picture does not look that old. I don't remember markers like that being used on 1983 that didn't fade.
But this is Mumbai, one can never say what is real and what is Mayanagari.

And here in India, we have our own unwritten way to enforce discipline and it's through the system called caste.

These pictures are from the career counselling/ employment help section at Elphinstone Technical School in South Mumbai.
Stop learning. Start earning.
This section of the school also provides employment help for those who have just passed out of secondary school and cannot or don't want to study further.
However, besides Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, the school specialises in providing all kinds of technical skills from plumbing to operating lathe and computer machines to youngsters, mostly to the poor and lower middle class who have received very basic education from badly trained teachers that our Government Schools provide these days. Finally, it's up to the kids to find a career path for themselves.
I'm not sure if there will be many takers for this job that's prominently advertised. It's probably been hanging on the wall for decades.
But there are other options for both higher education and jobs that are prominently displayed for the students to choose from. But almost all of them are in Government Service and the Public Sector.
No, the recruitment done here and the figures are not headline material.

Work Space Mumbai Series: The lightboys
The Salmans and Shahrukhs of the film industry will agree that these men lift more weights, work harder and absorb most of the heat around the spotlight. They get shouted at by everybody, no one knows their names and are paid hard cash at the end of the working day. It's very hard labour. Carrying the heavy lights around; setting up the madness, silently. They work hard, they eat well and they are the only people in the industry who sleep well at the end of the day.
