Non-Mumbaikars - The name Chembur is derived from the Marathi word "Chimboree" which means a large crab. Kurla derives it name from "Kurli", a local name for crab too.

Mapla Por.

Historical Alleys is a wonderful blog that has interesting stories from the Malabar coast and Kozhikode (Calicut). Recently it had a very interesting story about a place called Mapla Por which used to stand where the Bazar Gate Post office and a building named Mangrol Mansion now stands.

These are images of what that place looks like today. But to understand its fascinating history, you will have to read Musa Mapla, the EIC and his Bombay Residence.
