Madh Village

Before the lockdown: Everyday things in a fishing village.

Madh Village

Mumbai Paused Hashtags: Dwarapalakas - Welcome signs to Mumbai homes and ghettos.

These hashtags were born to highlight how we mark our presence in a place to the outside world. It is like the clothes we wear, it is a marking of territory or expressing a cultural identity. It can be as a group or it can be as an individual but every door, doorway, corridor or a compound can have something to say.

These two images are from the doors of homes in the fishing village of Madh, on the Island of the same name off the North West Coast of Mumbai.

Velankanni - Mauli - Ambova - Dargah. The united colours of sea facing communities of Mumbai.

Ambova Island

On a "Matsyagandha' walk with Hallu Hallu, the walks organised with my friend Bombay Ka Shaana, we met Sita Moushi harvesting Mussels from the rocks during low tide. The place is Ambova Island, off Madh.

If you need to know how bad the plastic problem is, all you have to do is look at our seashore. These are the tiny shrimps (Jawala - think it is called by the Kolis) that are dried on the rocks around the village of Madh. They are peppered with plastic large, small and invisible too I guess.

Scare crows and stones

They have to be constantly turned, like when you fry food, as they are laid out to dry.
