"To protect the nation become a sainik. Join the Shiv Sena."

#SaffronTide

Eastern Freeway Service Road

It's always interesting to watch how political parties mobilise their foot soldiers ahead of big gatherings. For the Shiv Sena, the annual Dusshera address by the chief is the biggest event of the year. Once upon a time, it was the founder of the party himself who was the natural draw. Now, it takes a little more work. The Sena has been active and capturing headlines in the past few weeks and it's no coincidence. There are elections in Kalyan- Dombivli and there is the most important speech where the party workers are expected to hear some loud speaking.

Kalanagar Signal + Chembur + Vashi Gaon

Afterlife of Bal Thackeray on the walls of Mumbai is getting interesting day by day.

At Kalanagar signal, he's taken the pose similar to that of one of the warrior gurus of the Sikhs or St George. Please note the Mumbai skyline in the background.

On a wall in Chembur we get an outline of drawings that will become standard style for other walls and stickers.

And on the back of a car, he is in sitting in the same pose as that is popular with Chatrapati Shivaji on his throne.

On Assignment: And justice for all. Extra Shots
Mhapkar's lawyer Shakil's story.

Shakil is a lawyer and publishes a weekly newspaper called Janata Ka Aina. He runs an NGO that educates children in the Antop Hill slums,, among other things.

"All around the Janata ka Aaina office, the community is changing. The drills and cranes reconstructing the lane leading up to it send up clouds of dust through the day. The sprawl of one-room tenements that edges up to the building are in various states of demolition. Ahmed cautions us when we invite him outdoors for a photograph; the builders working on the project will probably want to know all about the story. A group of young men from the tenements, clad in tight jeans, sporting red tilaks, are interested in him. “Who is he? You’re writing about him because he reads this newspaper? What do you mean, he publishes it?”"

In last weekend's Mint Lounge, Supriya Nair listens to two people who look back at the 20 years after the worst riots Mumbai has seen.

One of the boys who asked us what we were doing. He was ready to pose for a shot. Sweey chap, he's what you would call a aam mumbaiya ghetto boy.

This building is a hutment rehabilitation building. Unlike regular societies, they do not have a security at the gate to see who comes in. That is probably why one of the homes here had a video camera at the door / doorbell.

And justice for all.

Mhapkar's story.

Riot after riot it is the same story and in last weekend's Mint Lounge, Supriya Nair listens to two people who look back at the 20 years after the worst riots Mumbai has seen.

Suggested reading:
An old book called Riot After Riot, written by MJ Akbar. It will serve as a handbook on how to feel the pulse if a place is slowly spiralling towards a riot like situation. He goes from town to town that have been hit by riots in to 70s and 80s. Hindu Vs Muslims, Dominant caste Vs Lower caste, etc. and try to find out what Indian love to kill Indians.

Shivaji Chowk - Vashi

The After Life of Bal Thakeray: Ash in Vashi.

The mood around the pot of ash that was on display in Navi Mumbai had a very different mood from the ones on the Island city. None of the "Don't cry, fight" campaign message here, just candles, an exhibition of his life through photographs, and a rangoli.

Navi Mumbai is NCP territory.

Amarnath Chowk, Chembur

The afterlife of Bal Thckeray.

Don't cry, fight.

Shiv Sena's Saheb is gone. But that could be just a new beginning for the party. A pot carrying his ashes is now on display for his fans and supporters. It was a placed in a truck with a large display with a slogan "Don't cry, fight". And Yuva Sena seems to be the wing of the party that is being promoted now.

The coming election will be interesting and we can see the emerging iconogrpahics and symbols like this one starting with the Kalash that has been a device that has been used since Gandhi.

The making of Oh My God. Part 2?

The van is just being decorated, but the faithfuls are lining up.
