Talaash! Which part of Mumbai do you want to see?

Deonar Depot

A surviving STD, ISD, PCO, Local Call
telephone booth
Run by a woman
who also talks to people who come to make a call.
The callers are always talking loudly
Almost shouting like in the days when people used to wait
for it to be 9 in the night to make an important call.
The callers are mostly women here too
they carry lunch and towel in plastic bags of shops in faraway places.
Dress materials, toy shops, suiting and shirting,
sometimes discarded Jhama sweet shop bags from Chembur.

The callers discuss family problems.
Problems about money and money orders
working women who work on construction sites,
road building, cable laying,
back-breaking stone-breaking like jobs
maybe they have older daughter back home
filling her place
cooking, cleaning.
Sons who go to school to learn nothing useful.
Mothers-in-law who complain often.
Husbands who are out drinking.
The woman who runs the booth knows all their problems.
She is watching people at the bus stop without any interest.
Her ears pick up all the conversations
imagines the rest of the story,
just like me.

8 Lives Left

Khar Danda

Dandeshwar Temple in Danda Village, Khar.

The abode of Saraswati.

This temple is an isle of calm in the middle of maximum city with a deafening roar. A place for the young in the vicinity to shut out the city and concentrate on their studies just before important exams.

Is this Mumbai or some distant, prosperous village in a forgotten corner in Ratnagiri district? Guhagar maybe?

Dhanda Village

I am tempted to start a Cows Of Mumbai Series.
If I did, it would probably read like this:

We are sisters of mixed breed. My markings I suspect are a mix of Deoni, Baragur and Ayrshire with horns that suggest some coupling in the past with a horny Kankhrej bull. All that has left me confused and milkless like my sister here.

However I am blessed with a power to read the prayers of people who feed me tasteless balls of ghaas poos they mistakenly think we like. That makes me feel better but my poor sister here has no such power and I am sorry if she hides her face and refuses to smile for your camera Gopalagopala.

Old Bombay Type

Outside the Khada Hanuman & Shiva Temple in Parel is a Nandi bull facing Shiva that seems to be sculpted by a British man.

The style is very different from what is usually used and he also carved his name and date on it. To spot the difference, check out the other Nandi bulls that were added later at the same temple.
