Talaash! Which part of Mumbai do you want to see?

Rani Sati Marg, Malad (E)

Rooftop Garden.

If you ever cross the bridge between Malad West and East, just South of the station pause to look at this garden maintained by Nikhil and Anand of an organisation called Sprouts, they are carefully chosen to provide an urban home for butterflies and small birds.

(read more about Sprouts here)

The idea behind Sprouts, as I understood it, is simple. We the people of Mumbai do not know or have forgotten that we have rich dense forests within our city limits. It's often outside our windows and we live off it. Yes, we get our water from the water harvested in the National Park.

The idea of Sprouts is to open the eyes of young and old to the rich wildlife close to our homes on the Mumbai Islands and the Shayadri, close by.

And the other forest in our city? Our mangroves.

To demonstrate what we who live in the city can do, the boys at Sprouts have this little roof top garden where they grow vegetables chosen for their ability to house beautiful insects and little birds. They make it look it so easy!

Below the garden in a small room is the tiny Sprouts office packed with books. There could be a tiny forest chopped and pulped up into books. And as usual, I paused to click them.
