Talaash! Which part of Mumbai do you want to see?

Aarey Road

Right wing nutritional supplement and cow protein in Mumbai

It's fascinating to observe religious people and their food habits. Also, it is not just religious people, it's people with strong beliefs and especially when it comes to food across cultures. Today. among all the protein sources available in India, milk and milk products gets all the attention and led by thinking and amplification of the same by conservative communities from the the North Western part of India.

Mumbai's dairy farm

Aarey colony was created during a period when many people were trying to find ways to harvest milk protein for a nation trying to get out of poverty and malnutrition and it was  many decades back. Today, dairy is big business in India and a popular source of protein. It was the parallel experiment in Gujarat by Amul that tried the co-operative method of dairy distribution that is well known. The Aarey experiment seems like it was a way to get the dairy farming business in the city, out of the Island city, and move it to what is now Aarey Milk Colony.

I found this Aarey shop on Aarey Road selling milk and milk products and next to it was international supplements that may also contain concentrated protein from meat that is against the values of the current Hindutva ideology government of Maharashtra and Delhi.

The price of milk protein

Coming back to milk, the world price of milk is currently very low and skewed because of subsidies in Europe and developing countries. Even in India, subsidies and doles by state governments like Karnataka has led to a skewed milk prices (for the producers). The excess supply and stock of milk has an after effect on the streets of Mumbai and the shops. There are many new brands, all trying to push processed milk products and the brands are from across India. All you have to do is look at the curd aisle in your local super market or the brand being pushed in your local kirana store.

However, milk seems to rule and retails at 45 rupees a litre. approximately.
