Dry fish from the fresh water ponds of UP in a Mumbai dry fish market.
Shivdi has a very good dry fish market. Wholesale traders have shops here in the market which is next to the station and the road from the old fishing jetties to the East. Yesterday, when I went there looking for dried anchovies, I saw this small fish that looked different from the rest of the different types of fish available there. It turned out to be a the dried version of Chehlwa which is consumed fresh in UP. It is called Muktar or something that sounds like it in Mumbai.
Through a query on Twitter, I realised that the fresh water version of the fish is very popular in UP.
I was advised to fry it crisp like how we would fry dried anchovies and munch them.
